Siirtymä is an event rooted in ambient music and spatial experience. Rather than following the traditional format of a live concert, it explores how sound can shape an environment and create an atmosphere. Ambient music becomes part of the place itself, rather than something simply placed on top of it. For this reason, the event’s schedules and performances are intentionally overlapping and interwoven.
This overlap is not accidental, but a central part of the concept behind the event, now taking place for the third time. Ambient music is not built around a single moment, climax, or following a performer from beginning to end. Instead, it is about how sound transforms a space and guides movement through it. Since it is impossible to see or hear everything, the audience is encouraged to move along the route at their own pace, to pause, wander off and discover places in the surroundings, rather than follow a predetermined programme.
The structure of the event encourages people to explore their surroundings and discover places they might not otherwise stop at. Sound acts as both a map and an invitation. It guides the listener towards new views and situations, while leaving room for chance and personal choices. Siirtymä does not offer one correct route or way of experiencing the event, but many parallel ways of being present.
Another key aim is to help audiences discover new and previously unfamiliar artists. As performances take place simultaneously at different locations, attention is not focused solely on the more familiar names. Instead, audiences encounter artists along the way, often without any prior expectations. The music is discovered through the place, rather than through the artist’s name. This lowers the threshold for discovering new creators and leaves room for unexpected encounters.
A third, and particularly important, starting point is stepping away from a performance-oriented mindset. Siirtymä challenges the idea of experiencing a cultural event as a checklist, where everything should be seen and experienced in its entirety. The overlapping programme makes it clear that it is neither possible nor necessary to experience everything. Some things will inevitably be missed — and that is an accepted, even desired, part of the event.
The aim is for the visitor to move from doing to experiencing. Towards presence, listening and simply being in a space. Siirtymä creates a setting where participation is not about achieving or completing something, but about being — where every experience is inevitably personal and incomplete.
Siirtymä is not about covering everything, but about creating something meaningful. It invites you to slow down, wander and accept that whatever is happening in this moment and in this place is enough.

Organised for the third consecutive year by Suomen Ambientyhdistys ry and produced collectively by the community, Siirtymä is free and open to everyone. The event’s route leads from Eteläpuisto through Viinikanlahti and Hatanpää Arboretum to Rantaperkiö. The programme, curated through an open call, features performers and artworks selected from more than 300 applicants from around the world.
The event is supported by the City of Tampere.
